What does Christmas look like in this time of pandemic?

In the post, Christmas was calorful decorations and twinkling lights in houses, buildings, and streets.

Today we have less lights in houses especially of OFWs who could not go home dueto travel restrictions; and even darkness in businesses and shops that have remained closed.

lsn’t this like the surrounding darkness in Bethlehem brightened only by the light of a star?

In the post Christmas was blaring sounds of Christmas carols, noise in shopping centers, and loud porties in offices, houses and in the streets.

Today we have fewer passersby in streets, and limited number of people in restaurants and public places; hushed conversations beca use of face masks and social distancing; even silence in homes.

lsn’t this similar to the stillness ofthe night and the hushed conversations of Mary and Joseph around the sleeping Baby Jesus?

In the post Christmas was endless Christmas porties and lots of Jood and drinks.

Today we have less food on the tables anda healthier holiday fare.

lsn’t thls llke the slmpllclty and frugallty of the Holy Famlly In Bethlehem? In the post, Christmas meant giving and receiving gifts.

Today we may receive less gifts but may give more to persons who in need of the gifts of time, attention, connection,

and resources.

lsn’t this like the shepherds who went to visit the newborn babe and the three Magi who traveled from afar to

offer thelr gifts?

In the post Christmas was spent visiting Jamilies and friends, and enjoying vacations.

Today, travel is restricted and social distancing is enforced. W e are encouraged to stay home and spend quality time with each other; and to take time to reflect, to pray and to be with Jesus.

lsn’t this like the Mary and Joseph spending time with each other and focusing their attention on their newborn baby?

In the post Christmas meant going to different places to relax, entertain ourselves and distract ourselves Jrom our daily concerns.

Today we relax by sharing simple joys like family bonding, conversations at table, tending our gardens, and watching home movies together.

lsn’t this like the simple life in Bethlehem, devoid of distracting entertainment and amenities?

Christmas this year is unlike the past. But it resembles more closely the very first Christmasl

Wishing you a blessed Christmas full o f love, peace and joy!
