The parish of Villa Ojo de Agua is located in a very rural part of Argentina. The parish boundaries extend over a wide area in the department of Ojo de Agua, in the province of Santiago del Estero. The diocese of Santiago del Estero is administered by Bishop Vicente Bokalic, C.M. The Vincentian missionaries require a vehicle for pastoral activities. Fr. Héctor Alvarez, C.M. and his colleagues were finding it difficult to maintain the vehicle they use for pastoral work because the roads are rough, rocky and in disrepair. And then there is the cost of gasoline! The parishioners are from the working class or live in poverty. There is little work here, and in fact many communities are experiencing depopulation as people look for employment in urban centers. Without the means to keep up repairs on the vehicle or even afford the fuel, the Vincentian missionaries turned to the VSO for help. A VSF micro-project grant enables pastoral activities throughout the extensive parish boundaries – namely, administering Sacraments, visits to the sick and blessing of homes, participating in festivals and meetings, preaching of Holy Week and Summer missions and catechesis.
