54. Curia
Itinerary of the Superior General. From 1-4 September, he was in Papua New Guinea visiting the confreres. He returned to Rome on the 5th and was at the meeting of the members of the International Secretariat of Vincentian Studies. From 15-17 September, together with Fr. Juan Carlos Cerquera, Secretary General, he visited a religious community near Siena and then participated in the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the Daughters of Charity in Siena. On 17 September, he left for Tanzania to visit the confreres, remaining there until 26 September. On 27 September, feast of St. Vincent de Paul, he participated in the Eucharist at the Leonine College in Rome.
Visits to the Curia. Fr. P. Tewolde Teclemicael (Vice-Province of St. Justin De Jacobis) was here from 30 August to 5 September on his way to London. Fr. Carl Pieber (Eastern Province USA) was here from 1-10 September. On 12 September, two confrere-bishops, Msgr. Luis Solé Fa, C.M., Bishop of Trujillo (Department of Colón y Gracias a Dios, Honduras) and Msgr. Benjamin Marc Ramaroson, Bishop of Farafangana (Madagascar), had lunch with us. This meeting was a happy occasion for the Curia. Frs. Zeracristos Yosief (Vice-Visitor of St. Justin De Jacobis) and Stefano Angiuli (Province of Naples) were here from 22-24 September. From 22-25 September, Brother Peter A. Campbell (Eastern Province USA) was here. On 25 September, Msgr. Germano Grachane, C.M., Bishop of Nacala (Mozambique) arrived. Msgr. Georges Bou Jaoudé, C.M., Maronite Archbishop of Tripoli (Lebanon) visited the General Curia on 26 September. Fifteen confreres, who are studying in Rome, visited the Curia on 30 September to share supper with the members of the Curia.
55. CIF
Study session. The International Formation Center began its 21st three-month session of Vincentian studies on 10 September at the Motherhouse in Paris. Twelve confreres are participating in the session, coming from all the continents and most of them are English and Spanish-speaking. This session is coordinated by Frs. Hugh F. O’Donnell and Julián Díaz Catalán.
56. SIEV
Annual meeting. Some of the members of SIEV were at its annual meeting in the General Curia from 5-7 September. Those present were Frs. Alexander Jernej (Executive Secretary, Province of Austria), Juan Carlos Cerquera Trujillo (Curia), Eugene Curran (Province of Ireland), Hugh F. O’Donnell (CIF) and Élie Delplace (Province of Paris).
57. USA – East
Feast of St. Vincent. On 27 September, Feast of St. Vincent, His Eminence Cardinal Franc Rodé, C.M., Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, presided the Eucharist for the opening of the school year at St. John’s University in the chapel of St. Thomas More on the Queens Campus in New York. Fr. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., President of the University, said in the homily that St. Vincent de Paul continues to be relevant some 350 years after his death.
58. Provincial Assemblies
Naples. From 4-9 September in Pacognano (Naples). The theme was: “Revision of some Provincial Norms.”
Colombia. From 13-20 September at Martiniano Trujillo House in Chiñauta.

Vincent de Paul, example for the young, the sick, the newlywed
At the end of the general audience on Wednesday, 27 September, Benedict XVI presented St. Vincent de Paul as an example of charity for the young, the sick and the newlywed.
The Pope hoped that St. Vincent’s example would encourage young people “to carry out the projects of your future with a joyful and disinterested spirit of service to the neighbor.”
He then directed himself to the sick, some of whom were in wheelchairs in St. Peter’s Square, wishing for them that St. Vincent would help them: “to confront suffering as a particular vocation of love.”
Lastly, he recommended to the newlyweds that they be inspired by the saint’s vision of love in order to “build a family ever open to the gift of life and to the poor.”
