In the heart of the Philippines, a transcendental event took place: the Vincentian Popular Mission 2023. In this article, we will explore the impact and relevance of this mission, as told from the perspective of Fr. Kit Torayno, CM, and his fellow missionaries.
Several months have passed since the Popular Mission, but it is still difficult to forget. Those were truly unforgettable days. It took place in the heart of the Philippines, at the San Vicente Ferrer Mission Station located in Lumintao (Quezon, Bukidnon).
As Vincentians, we carried out our mission guided by a truth that always moves us: the poor are our teachers. In every face, in every story, and in every struggle, we find the living presence of Christ. This mission was not simply an act of service but a living testimony of this truth.
A top-notch team
From June 22 to July 16, the San Vicente Ferrer Mission Station became the epicenter of an extraordinary faith journey. Under the direction of the Mission Director, Fr. Edilberto Baculi, CM, and with the unwavering support of Fr. Thurs Gonesto, CM, the station priest, as well as the dedicated Parish Pastoral & Finance Committee, this event became a concrete manifestation of the love and dedication of the Vincentian Family.
Enthusiastic students from St. Vincent School of Theology (SVST), committed local missionaries, and esteemed Vincentian priests like Fr. Ariel Rotoni, CM, and Fr. Vincent Rabije, CM, joined in this noble effort. Together, they brought depth and richness to the mission’s objectives, demonstrating that when we unite our voices and wills, we can achieve great things.
The mission not only impacted the local community but also left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who participated. It was a vivid reminder of the legacy of St. Vincent de Paul, whose vision continues to resonate in today’s world.
Human dignity as a mirror of God
During our talks in the mission area, one of the main topics we addressed was the Dignity of the Human Person. We affirmed that their value is not defined by what they possess but by who they are: unique, irreplaceable individuals, each with their own gifts, talents, and potential. In this way,
our service became a means of living out the belief that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and love regardless of their circumstances.
Let us remember that every person we serve is a reflection of God. Let us strive to affirm their dignity, respect their worth, and honor the image of God in which they are made. In doing so, we will not only be serving them but also honoring and serving the divine image of God within ourselves.
Legacy and continuity
In the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul, we can all appreciate the impact of this mission and the legacy it continues to perpetuate. Witnessing the vibrancy of St. Vincent’s vision in today’s world is a sight to behold.
